Awesome anecdote. I have to agree - in the end we have to tell the story in a fair and truthful manner. Otherwise it's just stats and I've seen all kinds of crazy stuff come from just stats.

Hi CharlotteAnn. You have a nice momento from Gov. Ann Richards. She certainly had fire in her belly. I happy to see your political blog going strong. Take care! Stay away from the gaming tables!

"Dimwits" is such a nice word for them!
I did do an article on George W., and there was serious pressure brought to bear on that as well -- my post on being "Rove'd" explains that.
Sadly, I didn't get to speak to Ann again. I regret that more than I can describe.

Did your dimwit editors consider running your in-depth Richards piece and then having you do a similar article with George W.? You could have successfully portrayed them both by letting them speak in their own words.

You couldn't have faulted Gov. Richards if she never wasted time granting you an interview after that.

This article turns me into Ben Folds. "It gets me real pissed off and it makes me wanna say" things I should not and could not in a family newspaper.

What's maddening is that the truth is always more entertaining and would result in higher circulations. It would yield better writing. It would perhaps even engage more readers and get them to participate in civic life.

Instead, the status quo forces campaigns to play fight to fit into the snoozerama scenarios kooked up in the last place that should ever decide what's news: editorial board meetings.
